A YEAR WITHOUT TRAINING :( how to deal with not being able to train martial arts during a pandemic

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

It's effecting us all. Some more than others, but if you're like me and have been a serious martial artist for a while and are starting to get a bit pissed of that you can't train...Read On. This Will Help Keep You Sane.

Most of us originally thought we would be back on the mats in a couple months or at least by mid summer, but as time progressed we started to realize we were not going to get back to any type of normal training any time soon. Now it's looking like it may indeed be some time before we can get back to training with partners, However There Are some things we can do to keep ourselves sharp. Read More.

1. CARDIO TRAINING. Something anyone who has ever trained for a fight knows Cardio Is King. Do Not let your cardio go to shit. There are so many reasons for keeping up those couple mile runs a few times a week, like not getting fat and keeping your endorphins going, but I'm only going to list the tactical reasons here. You may need to run away from Danger or Towards It. Do Not let yourself be the weak link in a team; keep that cardio up. During an actual street fight (or in the ring) once those punches start flying and your adrenaline kicks in, it's going to feel like you've already run a marathon, and now you need to fight for your life, So Stay Frosty and get out there and train!

2. WEIGHTS. Weight Lifting is something I've noticed a lot of Martial Artists take for granted but it is so Vitaly important! Would you have wanted to fight Arnold Shwartzenager or Sophestor Stallone in their prime? If you say yes, you are either crazy or super talented lol. Being physically imposing is not only a good way to pick up chicks and let other men know who is in charge, It's also Crucial to your ability to control another man. Not to mention knock out power. If you have ever grappled with one of those Guerrillas at your gym (one of the ones with cardio) then you will know wtf I'm talking about. If you don't have weights then do a bunch of pushup and bodyweight exercises (Just look at how jacked guys in prison get) NO EXCUSES GUYS!

3. "SOFT SKILLS" We tend to get wrapped up in the "HARD SKILLS" like Shooting, Hand to Hand, CQB...But we can sometimes forget how important things like Social Engineering, NLP, Lock Picking, and Linguistics are. You have literally no excuse not to be bettering yourself as a Warrior right now. I have talked with hundreds of SOF guys and Professional TEIR 1 S Soldiers in my time and they all say the same thing. They are ALWAYS LEARNING and Always training The Fundamentals. If you want to Become The Ultimate Warrior, Its going to take alot of work and at least 40-50% of that work is not physical in the way Hand to Hand is. So go learn a new language. Or at least work your dry fire at home!

4. WATCH TRAINING VIDEOS. These days with the internet and YouTube, it is easier than ever before to get access to high level training materials. (GUTTER FIGHTING SECRETS YOUTUBE AND INSTAGRAM IS A GREAT RESOURCE) When we sit down and set aside an hour or two to watch training films it trains our brains. It also teaches us new skills. Again...Warriors are Always Learning. Go watch a first aid training video and learn how to patch up a buddy if he goes down (or yourself). Learn the finer points of E&E like resistance techniques or watch videos about historical battles and learn from the past. It's all training and it's all at your finger tips these days. Go Train Your Mind. I suggest Training Your Mind after a work out. This way you will absorb more information.

THESE HAVE BEEN 4 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND DURING THIS B.S. PANDEMIC (the virus is def not B.S. but the fact that we can't train sucks!!!) DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET RUSTY OR LAZY. KEEP TRAINING YOUR BODY AND MIND SO THAT IF YOU NEED TO GET IN THE FIGHT YOU CAN!!!
